Second Class School Tour at Seedsavers

June 12th, 2017

Second Class went to Seedsavers in East Clare last Thursday 8th of June. We got to make pizzas. First we rolled out the dough, then we spread the tomato sauce and finally we added our favourite toppings. We put it in an outside oven and it took less than two minutes to bake each pizza. Next, we went on a treasure hunt in groups around the organic Seed Gardens, heritage Orchards and Native Woodland Trails.  We had to smell some amazing herbs and flowers to find some clues. We enjoyed eating the treasure we found!! Pond dipping was great fun. We caught some amazing creatures including newts, pond skaters, tadpoles and a water boatman. We planted marigold seeds and got to bring them  home to look after and watch it grow.

Author Visit

June 12th, 2017

Children’s author, Olive Mooney, came to visit 4th, 5th and 6th classes on Friday last.Olive read a couple of chapters from her book and answered many questions on what the life of an author is like. It took Olive 18 months to write her first book, The Book of Ornis. She bases many of her stories on events and characters that she sees in her own life. It takes a long time for a publishing company to decide whether to publish an author’s book or not. If you want to write your own book, you have to spend a long time editing your story and checking for spelling mistakes, just like we do in St. Tolas. Many thanks to Olive for sharing her time with us. Some of us would like to write our own books!!

Fun Walk 2017

June 8th, 2017

On Friday, May 26th our entire school went for a mega walk all around Shannon. We had lovely weather for it and had great fun, even trekking up Tullyglass hill!! We were greeted with a welcome surprise when we saw members of the school’s Parents Association greeting us back with a cool refreshing drink each. Thanks to all parents who helped out on the day and to all our fantastic families who helped to raise over €4,000 for the school. Special thanks to all our Junior and Senior Infants who looked after the children in 5th and 6th classes…they wouldn’t have gotten up that hill without the help of our youngest pupils!!

Chicks Day 3

June 8th, 2017

3rd class were very lucky yesterday when they came to see the chicks as they got to see one hatching (no.6). Yesterday evening No.7 made an appearance. Therefore when we came into school this morning all chicks were dry and fluffy and all moved to the ‘Brooder’. We have water, food and a hot plate in the brooder to keep them warm so they can grow big and strong. The pupils are very excited to name them today.
